Last Day Reflections

31 08 2007

Today after packing everything we went downtown Porto Alegre for last minute shopping and passing out tracts.  We then conducted a service for Missionary Gary Trometer in the city of Canoas.  One lady trusted Christ and the people were blessed.

At 7pm we left the HBC team at the airport.  They have a big trip ahead of them.  There were tears as they left.  What an exciting week!  Truly they raised the bar for future teams that will visit…they were very well prepared and ready to serve.  Several souls were saved as a direct result of their ministry and contacts were made for the new church plant. Pastor Recker shared that our target area on the north side would be his as well if he was church planting in Porto Alegre.  He transferred to us the grace of his great urban courage as we consider the beginning days of Hope Baptist Church.  Our hearts are full and geared up to begin the first step this next week of finding a car and then a location for the new church. Thank you for praying for the HBC team!  God blessed and their visit will never be forgotten  hbcmissionstrip2007-280.jpgbrasil-carmine-card-005.jpghbcmissionstrip2007-272.jpghbcmissionstrip2007-271.jpghbcmissionstrip2007-215.jpg

Letter to Heritage from Brazil by Antoinette Nwandu

28 08 2007

Hello Dear Church –

Our Brazil missions trip is half over and we wanted to update our church family on the ways that God has used us in Brazil thus far. We arrived at around 2am on Friday morning after a delay at the airport in Sao Paulo. We had no idea how or where we were supposed to meet Jon & Patty Hutchins, but soon heard shouting and cheering from the small crowd. Jon, Patty and several other missionaries met us with smiles and excitement, making us feel instantly welcome! We have been staying at the seminary facilities near the Igreja Bautista, living and serving among the students and church members.

FRIDAY: After our daily morning devotions, we headed to the city center in Porto Alegre and handed out 700 tracts and sang hymns in Portuguese. Pastor Jon was able to witness to a man names Sergio while we explored the area and bartered with local craft merchants. Then we headed to a poor barrio (favella) just off the main road called Tristeza (Sorrow). The barrios here are called favellas, shanty towns crafted of tin and wood that seem to spring up at random right next to rich areas or shopping centers. Stray dogs roam the streets and high-tech satellite dishes stand on top of crumbling shanty houses. A wonderful, godly woman named Fernanda started a Friday kids club only a few weeks ago and we taught Bible stories, made wordless-book bracelets and animal balloons for 30 favella children. Praise God, they were receptive and open to the gospel, thankful for our stories and songs and happy with the balloon animals. Then, that night, we attended a teen meeting at the seminary and were able to fellowship with an entire family of brand new believers. We pray for Sandro, his wife Marieusa, and their children William, Mike, Moema and Natalia. We pray for the Igreja teens and their youth leader, a wonderful, Godly man named Marcos. His wife Marisa has cooked for us several times and his son, 8-year-old Dionathan, is the team’s unofficial little brother.

SATURDAY: The rain and cold weather has continued, though, praise God, he’s given us a flexible, “can-do” attitude. We helped around the seminary (organized the library, bookstore, stapled tracts, and made visuals and prizes for the various church Sunday Schools). Then we headed to the church at Ponta Grossa and taught at the kids club there and did crafts with around 20 eager kids, who LOVE learning English phrases and teaching us Portuguese. A mother and faithful church member thanked us for the lesson on “love your enemies” because her son was going through a difficult situation at school just last week! Later that afternoon, we split up and had a men’s and women’s fellowship with Ponta Grossa church members. That night we were in for a treat: Alexander (who is unsaved) and his wife Deise (faithful church member) invited us to their home and cooked a traditional Brazilian BBQ, called a churrascaria. TRE LEGAIO!!!!!!! (sooooooo cool). They definitely “killed the fatted calf” and put out their very best, making us feel loved (and stuffed!) with wonder fresh meats, traditional gaucho breads and five (yes, five) traditional desserts. We gave Alexander a plaque that he hung above his powerful churrasco fire-pit and showed our gratitude by washing all of the dishes while we sang hymns.

SUNDAY: We worshipped with pastor Roger Crowder and his wife Sharon at the Igreja Bautista. We sang for the congregation and presented testimonies. Pastor preached from 2Peter 1:3-4 and we helped in Sunday School, teaching Bible stories to the children. That afternoon we got a small taste of the Brazilian WalMart (Biggy Biggy!) and gave tracts to the register workers. Then, we worshipped during the evening service at Ponta Grossa, where we sang and gave testimonies again and pastor preached from John 5.

That evening we invited Marco, Marisa and Dionathan, and the missionary at Ponta Grossa, Mike Ring and his family Tammy, Nick, Noelli and Nikayla, to eat with us at the Brazilian pizza. We’ve been so fortunate to experience Brazilian hospitality at every turn, and this was no exception. We sang hymns in the restaurant and gave tracts to the patrons sitting next to us. We closed out the pizza place with singing and festivity that made the waiters smile.

MONDAY: So far today we’ve helped roof the Pnta Grossa Sunday School (men) and gone on visitation (women). During visitation, we met an unsaved couple, Saulo and Nara, whose son comes to Sunday School regularly. We sang for them, gave testimonies, and got a tour of their farm area. They are proud people, carving out a living in the traditional gaucho (cowboy) style, eager to show us their horses, chickens and home-made passion fruit ice cream (oh boy!!!!!!). We felt that Saulo was a bit more receptive (especially when Daniel gave him his team jacket to keep) and pray for the Lord to work in their hearts. We’re at Jon & Patty’s apartment now, fellowshipping with Roger and Sharon Crowder. We’re half way around the world and you wouldn’t believe it: Ashook and his brother in law, Johnny, (such a blessing) have made up Trini-style curry dinner. The Brazilians won’t know what hit them!!!!

Gob Bless you all. We have brought you here with us in our hearts. We’ll see you Saturday and, God-willing, send another update before then.

Brazil Team!!!!!

Day 3 - Ministering in the churches

27 08 2007

This morning we visited Igreja Batista Fundamental in Tristeza.  Pastor Roger Crowder (American Missionary) is pastoring that church.  We gave testimonies of salvation and Pastor Recker preached the Word.  That afternoon after lunch we took a drive to the North Side of the city where the Hutchins will be planting the Hope Baptist Church.  At one point we stopped and prayed that God would give the Hutchins a place to meet and raise up a great church for God’s glory.  This evening we went on to the church in Ponta Grossa where the team again gave salvation testimonies and Pastor preached.  5 came forward that evening to dedicate their lives to the Lord.  The Lord truly worked in hearts.  After church we had Pizza (Brazilian Style - all you can eat brick oven pizza)

Day 2 - Showers of Blessing

27 08 2007

The rain stopped our plans to go to Ponta Grossa and help with the roof but in the morning we were able to staple many tracts as well as organize in the seminary library.  After lunch we headed to Ponta Grossa for the childrens club and had a great turnout even with the cold rain.  The children enjoyed the stories and crafts.  At 4pm there was a ladies meeting and a mens meeting in Ponta Grossa as well.  In each one the team gave testimonies and Pastor Recker preached to the men.  That evening the team went to the home of Alexander and Daisy.  Daisy attends the Ponta Grossa church but her husband is not yet saved.  We had a wonderful time with them.  Alexander cooked over 24 pounds of meat, Brazilian style (over the open fire)  We all ate till we were stuffed.  The team gave the family gifts (I love NY t-shirts)  They also sang Amazing Grace in Portuguese.  It was a late night but one that will not be forgotten.  (Pictures to come)

Day 1- Great Joy in the City

25 08 2007

Wow!  What a day.  The day started with a challange by Edgar to let the Holy Spirit guide our steps throughout the day and then let the gospel be on our lips.  We begin by going right into the heart of the city by bus to pass out tracts and meet our city up close.  700 tracts were given out as we walked around in the center of the city.  At one point the entire team broke out in song right in the middle of the multitudes.  The team came well prepared with songs memorized in portuguese.  People began to gather around to receive gospel tracts.  Everyone was touched by the site of the multitudes.

After we returned from the city we conducted a Bible club in the community center located in a slum of Porto Alegre.  God worked. The Brazilian children loved the smiles and gifts of the HBC team.

This evening we took part in a youth gathering at the seminary.  Brian Recker and Janina Londono gave their testimonies.  It was obvious that God was working through them.  Brian Recker led the international gathering in some games.  Pastor Recker finished the night preaching about the Philipian jailer.  It was an awesome night of fellowship.  You can tell the brazilians had a great time as many stayed afterward to fellowship.

To sum up the day - several of the team comented that if this was the only day that they could of spent in Brazil it would of been well worth it.

We give glory to God for His protection and blessing on this day.  We pray that tommorow the rain holds off as we make our way to Ponta Grossa.

Many wonder where we live.  Last year the Lord provided us an apartment close to the center of the city.  The name of our apartement is “Sunny Place”.  We live on the sixth floor.

First Sunday Back In Brazil

Give Us Brazil O Lord!

2 08 2007

        brasil.gif

Give us Brazil, O Lord

 Give us Brazil, O Lord
Where sin-sick souls live seeking their pleasure,
Happy, fulfilled, blind beyond measure;
Living for self, not the heavenly goal,
Wounded by sin, it’s taking a toll.

Give us
Brazil, O Lord
Young children in homes of hateful men;
Men of the street
living in sin,
Wanting women who know no leader.
The need is faithful men who will not teeter.

Give us Brazil, O Lord
Its blue skies, its green fields,
The Amazon deep, its cities steep,
Millions upon millions lie perishing in sin,
Brazilians so happy, O Lord give
me them!

Give us Brazil, O Lord
For Christ is the only name
Where sin-sick souls can come and claim
The riches of eternal forgiveness,
Asking anything, yes, anything in His name.

Give us
Brazil, O Lord
More souls with your bride to be,
One from every kindred, tongue we see,
They all do sing with one accord,
The joyful sounds of sin no more!

 Give us Brazil, O Lord
We’ll preach the Gospel, no fear, no shame,
Glory and honor to the Lamb that was slain.
His pain your gain, O
Brazil, see His glory!
It was for you, for you that He came!
