It is widely recognized that the majority of Christians in the world today live in the Southern hemisphere. Along with Christianity gaining a new geographical center, theology, too, is moving south. If you are wondering where your pastor will get his ideas in a decade or two, you might look to Latin America, where the non-Catholic church is growing—often without any connection to historical Protestantism. (Eastern Orthodoxy is not included here in the term non-Catholic.) Church historian Andrew Walls calls Latin America a place of “theological ferment.” With hardly any Christendom left to speak of, the future of Christianity is wide open for new and unexpected developments. National and international Christian tv channels, radio stations, and books testify to the numbers. Sociologist Paul Freston found that Protestants in countries such as Guatemala, Brazil, and Chile make up about one-third of the population. The large number of people these churches convert to Christianity leads some analysts to regard Latin American Pentecostalism as having “revolutionary potential” and an immense capacity to bring hope, a new form of democracy, and solutions to many Latin American problems.

Como diz o ditado, “os tiranos são os primeiros escravos da tirania”.  E como é incrível que eles oprimam querendo silenciar as vozes da História.  Sob o pretexto do “Revisionismo” fala-se que ambos personagens e textos de tal evento são fábulas criados e exagerados em favor de uma grande conspiração política.  Sem dúvida existem muitas mentiras históricas que tem que passar pela peneira do tempo.  E, normalmente, a verdadeira história é analisada na qualidade do seu escrito.  Além de, segundo a multidão das suas testemunhas oculares, e  sua  transparência sobre as “fraquezas” das pessoas que ela descreva.  Tudo isso é suficiente para revelar que temos em nossas próprias mãos pérolas preciosas.  Ademais, fábulas não têm o poder de tocar a alma humana em todas as culturas.  Mentiras não costumam ser usadas para inspirar milhares de pensadores, obras de arte e museus no mundo inteiro.  Textos sem valor não são traduzidos e lidos em 60 idiomas, e se tornam por fim um dos livros mais lidos ao lado da próprio Bíblia. Tal livro que tem passado pela prova do tempo e do vento é O Diário de Anne Frank, o documentário mais dramático da Segunda Guerra mundial e a pérola do holocausto dos judeus. 

Em 1940, os alemães invadiram a Holanda, onde Anne Frank, menina de onze anos, inocente e cheia do fôlego da vida, morava com seus pais.  Anne veio de uma família de comerciantes judeus da cidade de Amsterdã.  Logo pela metade daquele ano, o regime antissemita nazista começaria a controlar e perseguir os judeus.  Colocaram-nos em escolas separadas,  identificando-os e inquietando qualquer tipo de liberdade que eles tinham.  Com o tempo, as coisas ficaram muito perigosas e Otto Frank, pai de Anne, tentou imigrar para os Estados Unidos, sem sucesso.  Por fim, eles fugiram e esconderam-se junto com algumas outras famílias no famoso “anexo secreto” por dois anos e meio.  No décimo terceiro aniversário de Anne, o seu pai a deu um presente muito especial.  Anne sonhava há tempos com um diário para escrever os seus pensamentos.  Ao receber, ela escreveu na primeira linha:  “Espero poder confiar inteiramente em você, como jamais confiei em alguém até hoje, e espero que você venha a ser um grande apoio e um grande conforto para mim” (12 de junho de 1942).  Nos dias seguintes era assim mesmo que Anne derramava a sua alma através de uma caneta até o dia 1 de Agosto de 1944, quando a palavra escrita parou e os nazistas invadiram o seu esconderijo,  levando todos ao campo de concentração.  Até o fim da guerra, que durou seis anos,  seis milhões de judeus morreriam; ou seja,  2.279 pessoas por dia.  No dia 16 de março de 1945, às 10h15min de manhã,  Anne também faleceu no campo de concentração Bergen-Belson, poucos meses antes da fim da guerra.  O diário de Anne Frank pinta um quadro bem transparente daqueles anos da sua vida curta.  Um quadro que tem tocado milhares que tiveram a coragem de olhar para a sua trajetória.  Apesar de sua história ser muito triste, podemos minar muitos tesouros e esperanças humanas da vida de uma menina.  Um desses tesouros é o fato de que leitores são líderes.

O diário de Anne revela que jovens são capacitados a escrever sobre assuntos bem profundos.  Essa menina evidentemente poderia opinar sobre temas como política, economia, ideias sobre capitalismo, nazismo, guerra, etc.  Ela refletia nas razões do seu próprio sofrimento  e escreveu: “O homem nasce com o instinto da destruição, do massacre, da fúria, e enquanto toda a Humanidade não sofrer uma metamorfose total, haverá sempre guerras”.   Ela tinha um conhecimento que nossos professores e governantes  de hoje nem ao menos  processam nas suas mentes.   Alguns, ao lerem, provavelmente teriam que usar dicionário o até fazer uma busca no Google para entender as palavras de Anne.  Os textos de Anne têm reflexões profundas sobre amor, casamento, conflitos, relacionamentos,  a natureza do homem, as suas falhas, as dúvidas sobre sua própria religião e história, e a lista continua.  Profundidade humana que poucos adultos possuem hoje em dia.  Ademais, Anne lutava contra a depressão devido ao fato de estar presa numa casa por dois anos.  Ainda assim, ela é um exemplo de como ser corajoso e não ceder às suas emoções em meio aos muitos conflitos com sua alma, sua família e a crueldade de Hitler..  Se Anne Frank, na sua fragilidade, podia vencer, a mensagem é que também temos esperança!

 É importante notar que Anne não era um gênio.  A sua vida toca a humanidade porque ela era uma menina comum.  As paredes do quarto dela eram cheias das fotos dos seus atores favoritos.  Ela gostava de opinar e às vezes a sua língua lhe causava problemas com as pessoas mais íntimas a ela.  Ela tinha problemas com a sua mãe, que era um pouquinho dura com ela. Ela sonhava em ter um namorado como qualquer menina de hoje.  A humanidade de Anne levou o autor famoso soviético  Ilya Ehrenburg a escrever sobre Anne: “Uma voz fala por seis milhões, a voz, não de um sábio ou poeta, mas de uma menina comum”.  Mas, o que era diferente nessa menina comum que podemos salientar?   Anne Frank foi ensinada a exercitar sua mente na disciplina da leitura e escritura.  O privilégio e a responsabilidade de todos os seres humanos em cada sociedade é aprender a ler e escrever.  E os leitores são os líderes! 

O sistema da educação e valores familiares nos dias de Anne devem ser seguidos em nossa geração. Temos que nos voltar para essa realidade perdida na antiguidade, da importância da leitura,  e leitura bem extensa.   A ciência cognitiva de Jean Jacques Rousseau era a tirania sutil que ensina que o que é mais importante é aprender como pensar, e não conhecer tanta informação.  Essa filosofia não funciona na realidade.  É impossível fazer pensamento crítico sem todos os dados.  Erramos também quando pensamos que as escola têm a responsabilidade de ensinar as nossas crianças a pensar.  Isso também não funciona na realidade.  Claro que Anne frequentava escolas boas, mas o segredo da cultura naquela época estava com os pais.  Otto Frank tinha uma biblioteca em casa e estimulava a sua família a ler e pensar.   A história dos judeus nos mostra que quando eles não tinham nada, pelo menos tinham livros, e por isso sempre se tornaram os professores da antiguidade, fundando escolas e faculdades em todo o mundo.  Talvez por isso Hitler quisesse tanto matá-los, porque ele mesmo sabia que leitores são líderes.  Aqueles que não leram e não conhecem tanto as maldades quanto as maravilhas da História, vão sempre repeti-las, especialmente as maldades.  Como um sábio rei judeu escreveu: “Não há nada novo debaixo do sol”.  Ademais,  a preservação da cultura da liberdade sempre depende de um profundo conhecimento da História que tem que ser passado de geração a geração.  Se alguma sociedade esquece e evita ensinar sua História, logo será dominada por um tirano que tirará todas as suas liberdades, até o seu direito de ler e escrever a verdade.  A democracia e a liberdade somente funcionam num ambiente de leitores que são seus líderes.  A disciplina de leitura diária fez  de Anne Frank uma grande líder até hoje.  E você: como é a sua leitura e liderança?

Considere esses 7 benefícios que ganhamos ao ler:

1. A leitura desenvolve a mente.
2. A leitura desenvolve a disciplina.
3. A leitura aperfeiçoa o caráter, levando a pessoa à introspecção e melhoramento.
4. A leitura traz fé e edificação espiritual.
5. A leitura opera, pelo desafio, uma atitude de ação e mentalidade de missão e propósito.
6. A leitura preserva o conceito da liberdade humana.
7. A leitura torna-nos líderes. Com uma capacidade argumentar de pensar, analisar, criticar, melhorar e influenciar.

Duas partes do diário de Anne que mostra a sua disciplina de leitura:

“Talvez te pareça fantástico mas estou tão ocupada neste momento que o tempo não me chega para levar a cabo os meus trabalhos. Queres saber o que ainda tenho a fazer? Aí vai: até amanhã preciso de acabar a leitura da primeira parte da biografia de Galileu, pois o livro tem de ser entregue na biblioteca. Comecei ontem, mas hei-de lê-lo todo. Na próxima semana quero ler: “Palestina, uma encruzilhada” e o segundo volume do “Galileu”.  Ontem acabei a primeira parte da biografia do Carlos V e agora torna-se urgente pôr ordem nos meus apontamentos e nas datas genealógicas. Tirei, de vários livros, três páginas cheias de palavras estrangeiras que quero decorar. A minha coleção de “estrelas” de cinema está numa desordem aflitiva e tem de ser arranjada. Mas só isto me levaria alguns dias e como o Professor Anne, conforme já foi dito, está a sufocar com trabalho, o caos daquela coleção tem de ser fatalmente abandonado à sua sorte por mais algum tempo.   Teseu, Édipo, Peleu, Orfeu, Jasão e Hércules estão à minha espera. Os seus feitos históricos confundem-se ainda na minha cabeça como uma trama de fios embrulhados e multicolores. Também Byron e Fídias precisam de ser estudados para eu não perder a ligação. O mesmo acontece com as guerras dos sete e dos nove anos; ando a misturar tudo. Mas que queres que faça quando se tem uma memória tão fraca como a minha? E agora podes imaginar como serei aos oitenta anos! É verdade: ia-me esquecendo da bíblia. Espero que não demorarei muito a chegar à história da Susana no banho. E que querem dizer com os crimes de Sodoma e Gomorra? Ai! tanta coisa por perguntar, tanta coisa por aprender!”  (12 de Maio de 1944)

“Leio agora O Imperador Carlos Quinto, escrito por um professor de Guingen que trabalhou quarenta anos nesta obra. Em cinco dias li cinquenta páginas; é difícil ler-se mais, de um livro assim, e ele tem quinhentas e noventa e oito páginas. Agora podes fazer as contas ao tempo que levará a leitura e, depois, falta ainda a segunda parte! Mas… é deveras interessante! O que uma rapariga trabalha normalmente na escola não se pode comparar à tarefa que eu cumpro. Hoje traduzi, do holandês para o inglês, um pedaço da última batalha de Nelson. Depois estudei A guerra Nórdica (1700-1721), Pedro o Grande, Carlos XII, Augusto o Forte, Stanislau Seczinsky, Mazeppa, Brandemburgo, Pomerânia e Dinamarca – com todos os dados correspondentes. Depois li sobre o Brasil: o tabaco da Baía, a abundância de café, o milhão e meio de habitantes do Rio de Janeiro, Pernambuco e São Paulo, o rio Amazonas. Fiquei a saber coisas dos negros, dos brancos, das mulheres, dos mulatos, dos mestiços; fiquei também a saber que ainda lá vivem cinquenta por cento de analfabetos e que há malária. Como ainda me sobrava um pouco de tempo, peguei na minha árvore genealógica: Jan o velho, Guilherme Luís, Ernst Casimir, Henrique CasimirI, até à pequena Margriet Franciska que nasceu em 1929 em Otava.  Meio-dia: continuo a estudar, no sótão, o programa sobre as catedrais… uff! até à uma hora… às duas horas, a pobre rapariga (hum, hum!) já estava de novo a estudar. Macacos com focinho achatado e macacos com focinho aguçado. Kitty, és capaz de me dizer quantos dedos no pé tem o hipopótamo? Depois seguiu-se a bíblia, a arca de Noé, Sem, Cam e Jafé; depois Carlos V. Por fim: inglês com o Peter: O Coronel de Thackeray, vocábulos franceses, e comparar o Mississipi ao Missouri. But in spite of these extraordinary difficulties Christianity made a progress which furnished striking evidence of its divine origin and adaptation to the deeper wants of man, and was employed as such by Irenaeus, Justin, Tertullian, and other fathers of that day. Nay, the very hindrances became, in the hands of Providence, means of promotion. Persecution led to martyrdom, and martyrdom had not terrors alone, but also attractions, and stimulated the noblest and most unselfish form of ambition. Every genuine martyr was a living proof of the truth and holiness of the Christian religion. Tertullian could exclaim to the heathen: “All your ingenious cruelties can accomplish nothing; they are only a lure to this sect. Our number increases the more you destroy us. The blood of the Christians is their seed.” The moral earnestness of the Christians contrasted powerfully with the prevailing corruption of the age, and while it repelled the frivolous and voluptuous, it could not fail to impress most strongly the deepest and noblest minds. The predilection of the poor and oppressed for the gospel attested its comforting and redeeming power. But others also, though not many, from the higher and educated classes, were from the first attracted to the new religion; such men as Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimathaea, the apostle Paul, the proconsul Sergius Paulus, Dionysius of Athens, Erastus of Corinth, and some members of the imperial household. Among the sufferers in Domitian’s persecution were his own near kinswoman Flavia Domitilla and her husband Flavius Clemens. In the oldest part of the Catacomb of Callistus, which is named after St. Lucina, members of the illustrious gens Pomponia, and perhaps also of the Flavian house, are interred. The senatorial and equestrian orders furnished several converts open or concealed. Pliny laments, that in Asia Minor men of every rank (omnis ordinis) go over to the Christians. Tertullian asserts that the tenth part of Carthage, and among them senators and ladies of the noblest descent and the nearest relatives of the proconsul of Africa professed Christianity. The numerous church fathers from the middle of the second century, a Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Hippolytus, Clement, Origen, Tertullian, Cyprian, excelled, or at least equalled in talent and culture, their most eminent heathen contemporaries.

Nor was this progress confined to any particular localities. It extended alike over all parts of the empire. “We are a people of yesterday,” says Tertullian in his Apology, “and yet we have filled every place belonging to you—cities, islands, castles, towns, assemblies, your very camp, your tribes, companies, palace, senate, forum! We leave you your temples only. We can count your armies; our numbers in a single province will be greater.” All these facts expose the injustice of the odious charge of Celsus, repeated by a modern sceptic, that the new sect was almost entirely composed of the dregs of the populace—of peasants and mechanics, of boys and women, of beggars and slaves.

Matthew is a great Discipleship Guide.  I am learning a lot from it.  In Matthew 5 Jesus talks about the supernatural attitudes needed of his followers before they can become fishers of men.

And Jesus said, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19)

And then he taught them saying…(Matthew 5:1)

Supernatural Attitude # 1:   Humility -“Blessed are the poor in spirit”

What it is NOT?

The “poor in spirit” are not the poor of society.

What Jesus said was revolutionary and always caused uproar even as it does still today, but Jesus was not a Socialist, Liberation theologian, or more closer to home a social or prosperity gospel preacher.  Jesus often refused to feed the poor because they just weren’t getting the propositional truth message that he was the bread of life.  That day, thousands left from following Jesus.  Most of them were poor and hungry. 

The “poor in spirit” are not those of a wise melancholic personality.

Some of the proudest of heart are those most submissive and silent in their rebellion.  Paul and Peter were born with power personalities but like the rest, they had to possess humility. People are not born or bread with humility.  Humility is not something conditioned by culture. While Asian culture has some pretty cool stuff, they are far from “poor in spirit” because they bow to each other and know when to be quiet.  We hear of tyranny and torture everyday in these cultures.  Be careful never to confuse race, culture, or personality with being “poor in spirit”.

The “poor in spirit” are not the religious monastics.

Someone made the observation that the modern evangelical church has lost the vision for true Christian spirituality in that it is a pure reaction to ancient monasticism. Monasticisms taught that self-suffering and self-humiliation would bring the attitude of humility to the soul.  The soul has to be brought under subjection by self. This religion and Law not Grace!  And now, in the 21^st century, the total opposite, but rather, the same thing in a different man centered package.  Instead of “Discover the Worm in You” of monasticism it’s “Discover the Champion in You” of the modern gospel. Where’s the balance?  Both are only taught as man centered means to true happiness and the Blessed life in Christ. Look at all the self discovery books on the market.  We soon discover that neither the Monastic Gospel or the Prosperity Gospel really functions in the real world.  They didn’t tolerate it in the early church either (Colossians, Galatians, 2 Peter, Jude).

What is Humility?

Humilty is the Supernatutal Attitude of the Word filled believer.

Isaias 66:2 – “This is one to whom I will look:  he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word”.

One author says, “Humility is honestly assessing ourselves in light of God’s holiness and our sinfulness” 

This is to be “poor in spirit” without which no one will have real fruit in reaching the lost for Christ or entering the Kingdom of Heaven. 

We won’t take the time to flush that out but one furthur thought about humilty and witnessing..

So, Jesus said, “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”  Jesus wants to make his men fruitful.  It is interesting how Jesus will talk about “Removing the mote from your brother’s eye”.  I think we need to use that phrase to describe evangelism to new Christians in the local church instead of the traditional “soul winning”.  I think there would be a lot more fruit because “Mote Removing”   requires that the disciple follow Jesus and be taught and transformed by Jesus before he is commissioned to go and tell about Jesus.  Now that‘s “Personal Evangelism”!  The person is Jesus and following Him you become e powerful witness that knows how to do spiritual mote removal on others.  Man, the eye illustration is POWERFUL!  No one in history has ever said anything better that that.  Jesus is so practical.

Deepak Chopra talks about his new book on Jesus.  He says he will soon be doing Moses…  The Self Conscience Revolution movement has much to do with modern evangelicalism.   And, to the theologians…our view of the Kingdom has huge consequences.  Deepak sais, “The Kingdom of God is within you” and discovering this metaphor for spiritual enlightenment is the Jesus secret.  ”You are gods”, he sais, “One with God”.  In 21st century evangelical vernacular it would be to “discover the champion within you”  Have you taken the bait?

Why “neo-evangelicalism” was a monumental mistake

Neo-evangelicalism was a movement among evangelicals whose aim was to make evangelicalism seem more intellectually sophisticated and less polemically combative. The movement was strongly influenced by the early drift of Fuller seminary, led by men who were affiliated with Christianity Today and the National Association of Evangelicals, and driven mainly (I think) by a desire for academic respectability, even at the expense of a clear and consistent testimony.

Harold John Ockenga was an extremely influential voice in mid-20th-century evangelicalism. He helped found Fuller Seminary, Cordon Conwell, and the National Association of Evangelicals. He was pastor for many years of Park Street Church in Boston. He also introduced the idea of neo-evangelicalism and proposed that name in a 1948 meeting at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

The vision as Ockenga outlined it was driven by three priorities: First, it was a repudiation of fundamentalist separatism. Second, it was a summons to social involvement. And third (in Ockenga’s words) it represented a “determination to engage itself in the theological dialogue of the day.”

All three aspects of the neo-evangelical agenda had unintended and unfortunate consequences. The deliberate renunciation of separatism, for example, turned neo-evangelicals against their own fundamentalist brethren (in effect erecting an impassible barrier between the two groups) while deliberately opening the door to fellowship and cooperation with non-evangelicals. The call to “social involvement” was frankly ill-defined, and evangelical social involvement never really materialized on any grand scale, unless you count the rise of the religious Right after the 1970s. And the promised “theological dialogue” never really took place on any serious, sustained level. Instead, the movement trivialized and marginalized its own theology.

In the earliest days of neo-evangelical enthusiasm, the movement included prominent leaders like Harold Lindsell, Carl Henry, and Donald Grey Barnhouse, who were qualified and willing to engage in theological dialogue. But by the end of the century, the mainstream of the evangelical movement could hardly care less about theological dialogue. Evangelical megachurches were best known for their pursuit of shallow entertainments and superficial fads. And somewhere along the line, Christianity Today’s editorial board apparently came to the conclusion that engagement in theological dialogue meant giving a platform to practically every theological anomaly that came along except the old evangelical orthodoxies.

You hardly ever hear anyone (except fundamentalists) talk about neo-evangelicalism these days, but the fact is that neo-evangelicalism completely overwhelmed and commandeered the entire evangelical movement, and that is the primary reason the movement itself is no longer truly evangelical.

Face it: the evangelical movement that our grandparents and great-grandparents knew is dead. Evangelical principles live on here and there, but the label has been appropriated by people who have no right to it. It has been bartered away by those who promised to be the movement’s guardians and mouthpieces—Christianity Today and the National Association of evangelicals being among the chief culprits. But rank-and-file evangelicals are to blame as well, because they were content to abandon their own heritage and run after cheap amusements.

The average American today thinks evangelicalism is a political position or a religious ghetto rather than a set of biblical beliefs.
The task for the remnant who still believe and teach classic evangelical doctrine is to remain faithful and remember that the gospel—not the combined clout of a large politically-driven movement—is the power of God unto salvation.
